22.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2027–2030. Both the global economy and Finland’s finances are facing challenges. In its spending limits session, the Government focused on new targeted measures to strengthen people’s confidence in the future and improve the conditions for growth and employment.

26.1.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to prepare a programme to prevent segregation. The working group will identify measures to reduce segregation. The programme is due to be completed by the end of 2026.

17.2.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft government proposal concerning the competent authorities in rail transport. Comments can be submitted until 14 March 2025.

30.4.2025 | The Finnish economy is expected to grow, but the trade war may substantially slow down growth. In its forecast published on 30 April, the Ministry of Finance warns that general government finances remain weak, and that Finland has few buffers to reduce the impacts of a trade war.

9.10.2023 | Finland’s support to Ukraine, channelled through the World Bank Group, will be used to strengthen basic public services, repair critical infrastructure, promote policy reforms and lay the foundation for Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery. Part of the support will be used to help the least-developed countries affected by the Russian invasion and by other global crises.

31.1.2023 | A working group appointed by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposes measures to end the use of tobacco and nicotine products in Finland by 2030. The group submitted its report to State Secretary Eila Mäkipää on Tuesday, 31 January 2023.

9.10.2023 | Rising prices and interest rates have reduced household consumption and investments, which will push Finland’s economy into recession in the latter part of the year. Household purchasing power is expected to improve next year, which will increase consumption and boost economic growth. General government finances will deteriorate from this year on, and the general government deficit will be 3 per cent, or more, during 2024–2026.

8.3.2024 | On Friday 8 March, Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen visited Kyiv at the invitation of Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets. During the visit, he also met Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Deputy Minister of Energy Svitlana Grynchuk.

10.3.2023 | On Friday 10 March, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Maria Ohisalo signed two memorandums of understanding with the Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Ministry of Infrastructure and Ministry of Communities and Territories Development. The purpose of these is to assist Ukraine extensively in monitoring the state of the environment, and in rebuilding the country and in the green transition.

17.3.2023 | The climate and ecological crisis and the sustainability gap in general government finances cannot be solved separately. Actions that strengthen general government finances can be targeted so that they systematically take the economy, legislation, taxation, incentives and governance structures towards the green transition. 2.9.2022 | In the supplementary budget in July, the Government allocated additional funds to Ukraine amounting to EUR 70 million. Half of these funds has now been granted to improving food security and reproductive health services, ensuring the payment of teachers’ salaries, and to providing accommodation in Ukraine for those who have lost their homes.

16.12.2021 | On 16 December, the Government submitted a report to Parliament on the development of housing policy. The report summarises the principles and objectives for housing policy and presents solutions to housing challenges for the years to come. The housing policy development programme aims to provide good and affordable housing for everybody. The key objective of the development programme, implemented in 2021–2028, is to promote a long-term perspective in housing policy.

16.9.2020 | The Government budget session confirmed that funding for nature conservation will stay at a record high level. Next year the funding targeted to nature conservation will be EUR 100 million higher than in the beginning of the government term. The funds will be used e.g. to implement the habitats protection, restoration and management programme ‘Helmi’ and the Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland (METSO).

22.9.2022 | The Government proposes several amendments to the Rescue Act and the Act on the Emergency Services Academy. For example, it is proposed that the obligation to purchase and maintain smoke detectors in apartments be transferred from residents to building owners.

24.3.2021 | In its meeting on 22 March, the Government discussed the possible adoption of restrictions on movement. The preparation of the restrictions will continue and the Government will return to the issue in its informal meeting on Tuesday at 18.00. The Government will also inform the parties in Parliament about the restrictions at 16.00.

13.12.2021 | According the OECD’s review, the development of Finland’s environmental policy has been positive in recent years. The OECD considers the carbon neutrality target and targets related to promoting biodiversity and a circular economy as highly relevant. However, the current measures will not be enough to reach the targets that have been set and, according to the OECD, this will be a challenge for Finland in the coming decade.
