  3. 23.10.2025 | The requirements for acquiring Finnish citizenship will be tightened in accordance with the Government Programme. The new amendments concern the integrity requirement, the requirement for sufficient financial resources and the establishment of identity. In its session on 23 October, the Government proposed that the President of the Republic approve the amendments to the Citizenship Act on 24 October. The amendments will enter into force on 17 December 2025.

In Finland, staff communicate and organise events for families more often than in most other participating countries. Stress levels among ECEC and pre-primary staff and leaders are lower in Finland than elsewhere, but staff shortages are a major source of stress.

  5. 30.6.2025 | Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio has made a decision on funding for a cooperation project between the Natural Resources Institute Finland, the Finnish Forest Centre, State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Research Institute of Forestry and Forest Melioration. The project’s total budget is EUR 1.037 million in 2025–2028.

  7. 2.11.2024 | UN Biodiversity Conference COP16 ended with a skinny agreement on Saturday morning after having gone into overtime. A benefit-sharing mechanism for digital information on genetic resources (the Cali Fund) was established and the role of indigenous peoples was strengthened, but no understanding was reached on monitoring the implementation of biodiversity targets or mobilising finances. As the meeting dragged on and some of the negotiators had to go home, there was no quorum to make decisions.

  8. 5.4.2024 | Finland will have a prominent role in the programme session on water disputes and mediation in World Water Week in Stockholm on 25–29 August. Finland is for the first time a key collaborating partner of the event. World Water Week’s programme offers meeting opportunities for both water experts and members of the public interested in the root causes of and solutions to water disputes.   9. 2.11.2023 | On 2 November 2023, the Government appointed the new Board for the Natural Resources Institute Finland for the term 1 January 2024–31 December 2026. The Board is chaired by Executive Vice President Tuomas Salusjärvi and the vice chair is Saara Kankaanrinta, climate advocate and the co-founder of the Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG) Foundation.

  10. 29.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to prepare the necessary amendments to the provision of the Aliens Act on sufficient financial resources for family reunification. In future, a government decree would lay down provisions on the euro amounts required to demonstrate sufficient financial resources. This requirement would apply to family members of people who live in Finland with a residence permit.

  12. 1.2.2024 | The Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) will replace the experimental cowshed in Minkiö, Jokioinen with a new one. The planning of the project and competitive tendering and planning the implementation of the construction work will be carried out during 2024.
