26.1.2023 | The Government has decided to keep the annual payments of the state-subsidised rental housing and right of occupancy housing loans (ARAVA) at the same level as in 2022. No adjustment according to the consumer price index will be made in 2023. The decision will curb the pressures to raise rents and management fees in the current situation where the property management costs and the residents’ living costs are also rising rapidly.

8.8.2025 | The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health proposes appropriations of EUR 14.8 billion for the Ministry and its branch of government for 2026. This is about EUR 475 million less than in the 2025 Budget. The funding of wellbeing services counties is not included in the appropriations for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and its branch of government. Instead, it falls under the main title of the Ministry of Finance.

20.1.2022 | Entrepreneurs have been temporarily entitled to labour market support on more flexible terms during the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the deteriorating coronavirus situation, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament on Thursday 20 January 2022 to extend the temporary amendment.

12.11.2020 | In future, remotely read water meters for both warm and cold water will be installed in each apartment in new buildings with multiple apartments and water bills will be based on actual measured consumption. The Government proposes that related legislative amendments will be submitted to the President of the Republic for approval on 13 November 2020.

17.6.2020 | On 17 June 2020, the Government submitted a legislative proposal to Parliament in which it proposed a reform in the system used to measure and bill district heating, district cooling and water consumption.

16.12.2021 | On 16 December, the Government submitted a report to Parliament on the development of housing policy. The report summarises the principles and objectives for housing policy and presents solutions to housing challenges for the years to come. The housing policy development programme aims to provide good and affordable housing for everybody. The key objective of the development programme, implemented in 2021–2028, is to promote a long-term perspective in housing policy.

19.2.2025 | Following legislative amendments that entered into force on 17 February, wild-berry picking carried out by foreign nationals is treated as seasonal work. Companies must hire foreign berry pickers for a contractual employment relationship to enable them apply for an entry permit to Finland. In future, berry pickers will apply for a seasonal work visa for stays up to three months.

9.4.2020 | Third-country nationals residing in Finland with a residence permit or a permit based on the Seasonal Workers Act may change employer and field of employment without applying for an extended permit. The amendments enable such foreigners to work in duties central to the security of supply and to the functioning of the labour market. The temporary provisions are in force until 31 October 2020.

20.6.2023 | In cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the VATT Institute for Economic Research provides up-to-date information on the labour market situation of Ukrainians receiving temporary protection. The data produced by the VATT Data Room is open to everyone.

18.11.2022 | Minister of Education Li Andersson has awarded eight education providers 13 new authorisations to provide vocational education and training to complete a qualification as of 1 January 2023. The decision will expand the supply of education in English especially in the fields of cleaning and property services, accommodation, restaurant and catering services, tourism services, health and social services, and mechanical engineering and production technology.

As you can see from the picture, I am here in the familiar Engel Hall in the newly renovated premises of Merikasarmi. While on the face of it this space may appear to be the same as before, the Ritarikatu Hall, where the panel discussions are being held, is not easily recognisable.
