21.11.2024 | The Government proposes that on 22 November 2024 the President of the Republic approve the acts for establishing the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre.

10.10.2024 | The Government proposes funding for the establishment of the Finnish Space Situational Awareness Centre. Funding is proposed for the administrative branches of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The Ministry of Transport and Communications share of the funding amounts to EUR 411 000.  

13.11.2025 | Finland is applying for additional funding for its programme under the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border and in the Gulf of Finland. Finland is seeking funding of over EUR 16 million from the European Commission, following the Government’s decision on 13 November.

9.12.2025 | The Government proposes improvements to the Finnish Border Guard's preparedness and its ability to respond to the requirements of the changed security and operating environment. The Ministry of the Interior has sent out for comments a government proposal for an act amending the Border Guard Act and certain related acts.

17.3.2025 | The impacts of both climate change and biodiversity loss can be seen in the daily lives of most Finns. This is the conclusion to be made from the answers to the 2025 Climate and Nature Barometers. In municipal policy green investments are identified as sources of vitality, but opinions diverge with respect to their environmental impacts. Climate solutions are considered to boost Finland’s competitiveness.

25.2.2026 | Security policy topics, which have dominated international coverage on Finland since 2022, continued as the key theme in 2025. The number of news headlines about Finland was lower than the previous year, but President of the Republic Alexander Stubb assumed a significantly more visible role on the international stage. Country brand surveys indicate that Finland’s brand has become more positive, and awareness of Finland has increased since 2024.

11.10.2024 | In the third supplementary budget for 2024, the Government proposes to cut the appropriations for the Ministry of Defence’s branch of government by a total of EUR 378.332 million.

14.1.2025 | Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will visit Brussels on Wednesday 15 January. During the visit, Minister Strand will meet with Commissioner for Budget and Administration Piotr Serafin and Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos. He will also take part in the Sustainable Energy Reimagined conference.

11.12.2024 | Finland will receive EUR 50 million in additional funding from the European Commission to strengthen surveillance at the eastern border through the EU Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI). Finland’s 1,340-kilometre-long border with Russia is also an external border of the EU. More effective surveillance of the border will strengthen the security of the EU as a whole in the changing landscape of hybrid threats and instrumentalised migration.

11.12.2024 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a project to enhance the Finnish Border Guard’s powers related to preparedness to meet the demands of the changed security and operating environment. The project will assess and prepare the necessary amendments to legislation for normal conditions.

19.12.2024 | On 19 December 2024, the Government adopted a strategy and an action plan for tackling the shadow economy and economic crime for 2024–2027. During the new programming period, operating conditions of the authorities will be enhanced and their cooperation intensified.

9.8.2024 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications proposes that EUR 3.57 billion be allocated to its administrative branch for 2025. 

28.2.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the National Emergency Supply Agency (NESA) have invited Major General (ret) Kim Mattsson to conduct a study on cooperation related to security of supply. His task is to assess the relevance of the model for the cooperation between the public and private sector implemented by NESA in the Finnish emergency supply organisation and its current state in the changed operating environment.

5.12.2023 | The EU’s Competitiveness Council will meet in Brussels on 7–8 December 2023. Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will represent Finland in the meeting of ministers responsible for internal market and industry on 7 December. Meanwhile, Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will be Finland’s representative at the meeting of the ministers responsible for research and space on 8 December.

30.7.2025 | During the summer, there have been significantly more drownings and serious near misses than usual at public swimming areas. The Ministry of the Interior, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), the National Police Board of Finland and the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation met on 30 July to discuss safety at swimming areas.

He also spoke about the matter at the Nordic Summit with the region’s prime ministers and heads of government, which took place during the 75th Session of the Nordic Council.
