25.5.2022 | On Wednesday 25 May 2022, the Government adopted the Government Decree concerning the tributaries of the River Tenojoki (Tanaelva). The decree supplements the other fishing regulations for the Tenojoki river basin for 2022.

5.5.2022 | The amendments to the fishing regulations in the River Tenojoki for summer 2022, agreed with Norway, were confirmed by a Government decree. The amended regulations apply to fishing for species other than salmon. The legislative proposal to ban salmon fishing is being discussed by Parliament. The Government decree entered into force on 6 May 2022.

1.6.2022 | Parliament adopted the proposal for the act on a temporary ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki in the second reading on 31 May. In the Government proposal given in April it was assumed that the act could enter into force on 1 June. Now it seems, however, that the act will not enter into force until on 7 June.

10.6.2022 | The ban on salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki entered into force on 10 June 2022, when the President of the Republic approved the act concerning the ban. According to the act, salmon is fully protected and fishing gear intended for salmon fishing is prohibited until the end of the year.

21.4.2022 | The government proposal to ban salmon fishing in the River Tenojoki in 2022 was submitted to Parliament at the government plenary session on Thursday 21 April 2022. According to the proposal, this year no salmon fishing would be allowed in the River Tenojoki or its tributaries.

1.4.2022 | Negotiations between Finland and Norway on fishing regulations concerning the River Tenojoki for the upcoming fishing season are still ongoing. The fishing regulations have had to be reassessed based on comments received in both countries. To move the negotiations forward, a ban on salmon fishing is being proposed as an alternative.

The aim of the reform is to improve the safety of the transport, to prevent possible environmental damage and to provide favourable conditions for new businesses. The reform would clarify and harmonise the outdated, and partly unclear, regulation and so improve the safety and security of the entire society.

Changes will be made to the relevant government decree, in particular to implement the EU Directive on port reception facilities for the delivery of waste from ships. The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on the draft by 25 May.
