It is believed that artificial intelligence will in future have significant impact on the content of work and the everyday life of people. It is also thought to generate new innovations in all spheres of life. Artificial intelligence and robotisation are predicted to revolutionise societies in the same way as digitalisation is already doing. Experts in the field will be discussing the opportunities created by artificial intelligence in a seminar, convened by Prime Minister Juha Sipilä, at the House of the Estates in Helsinki on 7 February 2017.

Professor Peter Stone, one of the foremost experts in the field, opens the discussion. He is leading the project One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100) at the Stanford University. Prime Minister Juha Sipilä will in his address reflect on Finland’s path in the world of artificial intelligence.

The future of artificial intelligence is also discussed in several expert panels, convened to review how the skills and the operating environment in Finland could promote positive development in the field. The panels will also discuss the ethics, safety and regulations concerning artificial intelligence.

The panel members include Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, Director Matti Apunen (Finnish Business and Policy Forum EVA), Director General Olli-Pekka Heinonen (National Board of Education), Research Director Mikko Hyppönen (F-Secure), Professor Samuel Kaski (Aalto University), Chair Antti Palola (Finnish Confederation of Professionals STTK), Social Democratic Party Chair Antti Rinne, Research Director Anna Ronkainen (TrademarkNow), Chairman of the Board Risto Siilasmaa (Nokia), Executive Director Sari Stenfors (Augmented Leadership) and CEO Harri Valpola (CuriousAI).

The Prime Minister’s Office organises the seminar together with the Äly On Tekoja (“Intelligence Is Deeds”) project which is putting together a Finnish collaboration forum on artificial intelligence. The project is part of the Centenary of Finland’s Independence programme. Artificial intelligence is one of the themes in the preparation of the Government foresight report that is concerned with the transformation of work and future. The preparation of the report started in spring 2016.

The seminar is hosted by journalist Tuomas Enbuske and by Kari Mokko, Adviser in the Äly On Tekoja project.

The seminar begins at 12.30. It will be webcast and can be followed live on the website www.vn.fi/live and on Twitter with the hashtag #tekoäly
