The implementation of the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has started at the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

On 21 August 2023, Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne presented to the media the priorities of the Programme in the transport and communications sectors.

“We will build transport infrastructure, improve the level of services and strengthen the safety and security across Finland. There is a lot of work to be done in the implementation of the Government Programme, which we have already started. We must get our finances in order, which is why we need to be vigilant about spending, Minister Ranne says.

It is the Government’s goal to strengthen general government finances by EUR six billion during this parliamentary term.

“The level of financing for the Ministry of Transport and Communications will decrease, too. However, we continue to build transport infrastructure, because the Government has decided to implement a transport investment programme of nearly three billion euros to support the growth. The investment programme will be financed by selling central government assets,“ Ranne says.

Long-term development of the entire transport system will be ensured by the 12-year National Transport System Plan. It is based on economic efficiency, on safety and on securing the functioning of society. The Plan is now being updated. The Ministry will invest in the transport routes that are essential for growth, employment and security of supply.

The services provided by different transport modes will be improved using the available resources. Public transport services will be developed in cooperation with municipalities and well-being services counties. In addition, action will be taken to strengthen consumer confidence in taxi services. The development work will promote automation and make use of digitalisation.

The Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) will be reformed and its funding and use of funds will be made public within the framework of the Limited Liability Companies Act. The aim is for YLE to set an example in openness and efficient use of funds. The preparation will take place in a working group involving all parliamentary parties.

Safety and security will be strengthened in both transport and communications.

“The whole of society should be involved in transport safety. I would like to pay particular attention to the safety of children and young people,” she says.

We are taking a number of measures to strengthen cyber security throughout society. It is essential to increase the level of data protection and cyber skills.
