The main purpose of the Good Relations project was to combat racism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance by promoting good relations between people from diverse backgrounds. The project focused on relations between ethnic and religious groups.

The project analysed the concept of good (ethnic) relations in detail, helping to inform debate on how to promote ethnic relations at local and regional levels and set more concrete objectives. The project started in 2012 and ended in October.

Measuring good relations

One of the objectives was to establish indicators for measuring relations between people from diverse backgrounds. The outcomes of this process are presented in a framework document, including the following key components of the ‘Four Boxes Model’ of good relations:

- Conceptualising good relations
- Measuring good relations
- Promoting good relations
- Impact evaluation

The four domains of good relations in the framework are attitudes, personal security, interaction with others, and participation and influence.

Toolkit for promoting good relations

The project developed and tested a number of cross-community methods to combat xenophobia and other forms of intolerance in local settings in Finland and Sweden. These included:

- Community events
- Awareness-raising sessions
- Diversity expert training
- Information materials on xenophobia and good relations

This work was carried out in close cooperation with local civil society organisations and municipalities during 2013 and 2014. The Toolkit for promoting good relations presents these methods, with the aim of providing ideas and inspiration for local actors on how to prevent xenophobia and other forms of intolerance.
