Riku Huttunen to continue as Director General of Energy Department
On 14 November 2024, the Government appointed Riku Huttunen, M.Pol.Sc., as Director General of the Energy Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for a fixed term of five years starting on 1 January 2025. Huttunen will continue in the position in which he first began on 1 January 2015.
Huttunen previously worked as Director General of the Energy Authority in 2011–2014. Prior to that, he held various expert and managerial positions at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 2005. He has also worked in Finland’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels and at the VATT Institute for Economic Research.
Energy Department is responsible for energy policy and coordinates preparation of climate policy
As the public authority responsible for energy policy, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment coordinates the national preparation and implementation of climate policy and harmonises and compiles a long-term climate plan. The responsibilities of the Energy Department include tasks to develop the energy markets and the security of energy supply, promote renewable energy and energy efficiency, implement emissions trading and regulate nuclear energy.
