Senior Ministerial Adviser Pekka Morén will serve as the Special Representative of the Minister of Finance Katri Kulmuni in the international Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action.

The Climate Coalition of Finance Ministers was established on Finland’s initiative in spring 2019. The objective of the coalition is to incorporate climate change issues in the planning of economic policy and financing solutions. The coalition is co-led by Finland and Chile.

“Our aim is that the coalition will be a major player in the fight against climate change. Even if our main focus is now on combatting coronavirus, we must not forget that urgent action is also needed to combat climate change,” Minister Kulmuni says.

Morén has co-chaired the Climate Coalition meetings of the ministers’ deputies since February 2019. In future, he will also be entitled to represent the Minister of Finance in the Climate Coalition and, if necessary, serve as the chair of the coalition.

The task entails ensuring that the Finnish perspectives on climate policy are being taken into account and maintaining contacts to relevant stakeholders and authorities in Finland. Morén’s term as the Special Representative under the guidance of the Minister of Finance and State Secretary serving as Permanent Secretary lasts for two years. Before this, his responsibilities at the ministry were concerned with international finances and stability of the euro area.

“The coalition has got off to a booming start. Chairing the coalition has become a full-time job, and it is quite impossible for the minister to be involved as actively as would be needed. By appointing a Special Representative we can do even more to turn the coalition into a permanent cooperation forum,” Morén says.

The coalition has 52 member countries, and there are partners from about 20 institutions. Its activities are guided by the Helsinki Principles first drafted in February 2019.
