EUR 6.1 million in EU funding to Finnish businesses for construction of electricity recharging points and hydrogen refuelling stations

The European Union has granted EUR 1.9 million to Finnish businesses for constructing recharging points for electric cars in the Baltic States and EUR 4.2 million for constructing hydrogen charging points in Finland. Funding was granted under the Transport Programme of the Connecting Europe Facility, CEF.

The EU provides funding for example for building distribution infrastructure for electricity and gas, thus contributing to decarbonising transport along the trans-European TEN-T network. TEN-T links railways, inland waterways, roads and maritime and air connections into a single transport network.

In the fifth round of applications of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), the European Commission allocated a total of EUR 424.6 million. The decisions on granting the funding were made by the CEF Transport Programme Committee on 9 April 2024.

Neste Corporation and Neste Marketing Ltd received a total of EUR 1.9 million for constructing recharging points for electric cars in the Baltic States. The aim of the project is to build a network of public high-power charging points for 19 service stations. Two charging points will be constructed in Estonia, nine in Latvia and eight in Lithuania. The Finnish parent company will be responsible for coordinating the project, while the infrastructure construction will be the responsibility of the local subsidiaries.

Vireon Hydrogen Oy was granted a total of EUR 9.2 million for constructing green hydrogen refuelling stations for heavy goods transport in Finland and Denmark. A total of EUR 4.2 million of that sum will be allocated to Finland. The project aims to build and introduce a network of green hydrogen refuelling stations linking Northern Finland with continental Europe through Sweden and Denmark. The project comprises seven public hydrogen refuelling stations that can service both passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles. Four stations will be constructed in Finland: in Tornio, Liminka, Jyväskylä and at Helsinki Airport. The project also includes a construction plan for Denmark.

The deadline in the next round of CEF AFIF applications will be on 24 September 2024.
