On Wednesday 29 June, the EU Heads of State or Government met informally to discuss the outcome of the UK referendum and action to be taken to enhance cooperation between the 27 Member States. They deeply regret the outcome of the referendum but respect the will expressed by a majority of the British people. They also hope that the UK will be a close partner of the EU in the future.

The British Government must notify the European Council of its intention to withdraw from the Union. The Heads of State or Government stated that this should be done as quickly as possible to avoid prolonged uncertainty. There can be no negotiations of any kind until the UK gives formal notification of its intention to withdraw. Finland will conduct a careful analysis to see which matters will be affected by the UK's new relationship with the EU and the points to be considered during the negotiation process to protect Finland's interests.

The Heads of State or Government also discussed the future development of the European Union. The EU is and will remain united in responding to the new challenges.

"For Finland, it is important to have a common European resolve and vision of the future. We all recognise the economic added value of the Union, and the EU’s fundamental role in promoting peace, stability and security," says Prime Minister Juha Sipilä.

The Heads of State or Government will meet again informally on 16 September in Bratislava.
