Press release

The sanctions list includes representatives of the Belarusian judiciary, leaders of prisons and individuals or entities that are considered to have committed serious human rights violations and undermined democracy in Belarus. The EU Member States approved the additional sanctions on 16 December.

The European Union responds to the deterioration of the internal situation in Belarus by imposing new sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for serious human rights violations or for undermining democracy or the rule of law.

The individuals listed under the EU sanctions regime are banned from travelling to or through the EU and their assets and economic resources will be frozen. It is prohibited to provide funds or financial resources to individuals on the sanctions list.

Since 2004, the EU has imposed both individual and sectoral sanctions against Belarus in response to both the country’s internal situation and its complicity in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The current sanctions list holds 286 individuals and 39 entities. Belarus is also subject to an arms embargo and a ban on the overflight of EU airspace and on access to EU airports by Belarusian airlines. The sanctions were last extended in August 2024.
