Eurooppa-päivää vietetään 9. toukokuuta. Tänä vuonna Eurooppa-päivän päätapahtuma järjestetään Helsingin keskustakirjasto Oodissa ja verkossa. Ohjelmassa on laaja kattaus ajankohtaisia keskusteluja Suomen ja Euroopan tulevaisuudesta. Osana päivän ohjelmaa ulkoministeriön Eurooppatiedotus järjestää avoimen keskustelutilaisuuden ”Miten EU ja Nato rakentavat Euroopan turvallisuutta?”.

What does the EU mean for Finland’s security? Will anything change now that Finland is a member of NATO? How are the EU and NATO working together? The event, held in the Maijasali Hall on the first floor of Oodi, will start at 14.00 on 9 May. The speakers will be Piritta Asunmaa, Director General of the Political Department of the Foreign Ministry, and Minna Ålander, Research at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs. Journalist Rosa Kettumäki will act as moderator. A live webcast of the event will be available at eurooppapaiva.fi.

Europe Day is a collaboration

The day’s programme has also other events besides the discussions. There will be musical performances and programme for the whole family, and Kino Regina will show films shortlisted for the LUX Audience Award.

The Europe Day events in Finland are a collaboration. Partners include European Movement in Finland, the European Parliament Information Office in Finland, the Representation of the European Commission in Finland, Europe Information of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and JEF Finland.

Europe Day, held on 9 May every year, marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. The French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman held a speech in Paris in 1950, setting out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable. Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union. Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe.
