Extended version of NATO Glossary published

Publication date 10.11.2023 12.17

The NATO Glossary, prepared in a terminology project set up by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, gives recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English NATO terms. The new addition to the glossary contains key titles used in the NATO context and various concepts related to NATO’s purpose.

The first chapter published in June 2023 included organisation names in NATO’s political and military structure.

This extended version presents titles used in NATO’s political and military structure and in relations with NATO, such as Secretary General, Permanent Representative, Military Representative and various Commanders.

The glossary also contains key concepts related to NATO’s core tasks, approaches to security, crisis management and arms control. Each concept includes the term and its definition in English, Finnish and Swedish.

The glossary now contains a total of some 140 term. New terms will be added later.

Set up by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, the terminology project team drawing up the Glossary provides common recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of NATO terms. Project participants include experts and language specialists from the Finnish ministries, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Institute for the Languages of Finland. The Glossary is being circulated for comments among partners in Finland, Sweden and the European Union.
