The aim of terminology work at the Prime Minister's Office is to harmonise the terms used in government texts, both in the national languages of Finland and in foreign languages, and to promote clear communication. This facilitates cooperation between branches of government and ensures that the same terms are used consistently across languages.

The Translation and Language Division of the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office has published updates of four glossaries in the Government Termbank Valter: the Government Agencies and Public Bodies glossary, the Finnish Government Glossary, the NATO Glossary, and Parliament’s update of the Finnish Parliamentary Glossary.

The Translation and Language Division of the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office has published a new edition of the NATO Glossary with nearly a hundred new concepts and their translations. A team of language specialists is working to extend the glossary in consultation with experts. The Translation and Language Division of the Prime Minister’s Office has updated the Glossary of Legislative Terms and Phrases with new concepts and legal expressions and has made changes to some earlier recommendations. The glossary is available in the Government Termbank Valter and as a separate PDF file on the Government’s Glossaries and guidance website and in Finlex.

27.2.2026 | The National Cyber Security Office, based at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Finnish Terminology Centre are requesting comments on a draft of an updated Cybersecurity Glossary. The deadline for submitting comments is 20 March 2026. The glossary project is part of an implementation plan of Finland’s Cyber Security Strategy 2024–2035.

26.1.2023 | The Translation and Language Division of the Prime Minister’s Office has updated the glossary of concepts related to the reform of healthcare, social welfare and rescue services that was published in Finnish and Swedish in March 2022.

5.7.2023 | The NATO Glossary, prepared in a terminology project set up by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, gives recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English NATO terms. The first edition of the glossary contains the names of some 80 organisations in NATO’s political and military structure.
