The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will continue to reform its network of diplomatic missions by establishing a consulate in Munich, where Business Finland formerly had an office.

The new consulate will continue to support Finnish businesses across the different stages of market access. The consulate will also aid businesses in networking by opening doors to key stakeholders, such as local companies and authorities. Alongside business services, the consulate will provide limited consular services.

“Germany is an important ally for Finland in foreign and security policy as well as a significant trading partner. By establishing this consulate, we support the export of Finnish expertise to the world and strengthen the already very close cooperation between our countries,” says Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen.

“Munich is one of the economically strongest and most dynamic centres in Germany. The consulate will also serve Finnish businesses in the wider German-speaking area. The state of Bavaria alone is one of Europe’s largest economic regions,” says Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio.

In addition to the consulate in Munich, Finland will establish offices focusing on commercial and economic cooperation and export promotion in other cities where Business Finland formerly had an office. Offices will be established, for example, in Palo Alto in the United States and in Toronto, Canada. The Toronto office will also provide passport and notarial services.

The decisions on establishing diplomatic missions are made by presidential decree. The consulate in Munich will officially begin operating in the course of 2026, whereas the offices in Palo Alto and Toronto are already serving Finnish businesses.
