Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has discussed the responsibility that ministers, members of Parliament and other political actors have in social debate.

The Government upholds freedom of speech, which is one of society’s key values. At the same time, it is the Government’s position that all subjects must be discussed in a manner that respects human dignity. The classification or labelling of people or groups based on country of origin, education, socioeconomic status or other parts of their background has no place in Finnish social debate. Politicians have a responsibility to serve as examples in this respect.

On 31 August 2023, the Government adopted a statement to Parliament on measures to promote equality and gender equality and to reduce discrimination in Finnish society. The Government is committed to promoting equality and non-discrimination and eliminating racism in a comprehensive manner throughout the parliamentary term.
