The first issue of the Kauppapolitiikka magazine in 2025 delves deep into current events in international trade and politics. Why is the world economy buzzing, and who wins most when geopolitics change?

Flags of EU, China, and the USA

We asked experts to assess the effects of the US customs policy and discuss whether Donald Trump’s policy is purely economic or whether it signifies a return to an era of great power politics. Are we reverting to a world ruled by the law of the jungle and the will of the strongest? We explore these questions in our theme article.

On the bright side, the EU-Mercosur partnership agreement is at last in the home stretch, as is discussed in our analysis article. Can you guess how tall would be a stack of the United States’ total trade deficit of USD 900 billion in 100 bills? Or do you know what is the fourth most populous country in the world? Here is a clue: it has 17,508 islands, and Finland has a foothold there through the Global Gateway Initiative.

The interview section features Lassi Noponen, Director General of Business Finland. Kamal Kishore, Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and Janne Heiskanen, Finland’s Ambassador in Astana, were also interviewed for the March issue.

In addition, Mika Luoranen, Associate Professor of Sustainable Science at LUT University, discusses the sustainability of cryptocurrencies, and Pasi-Heikki Vaaranmaa, Head of Mission of the Permanent Delegation of Finland to the OECD, estimates whether the OECD could serve as an economic NATO. Mikko Hautala, Chief Geopolitical and Government Relations Officer at Nokia, calls on the EU to take swifter action on the global arena.
