Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Trafi and SYKE discussed the case involving the marine research ship Aranda
Experts from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency Trafi and the Finnish Environment Institute SYKE met on Monday, 13 October at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. The experts discussed the events that had occurred on the Baltic Sea and were reported in the press during the weekend. According to the news the Aranda, SYKE’s marine research vessel, encountered a Russian naval ship in the Baltic Sea near Gotland on two occasions in August and September.
The expert discussion was based on the SYKE report on events that took place in the Baltic Sea on 2 August and 2 September. The Trafi representative stated that the incident did not endanger overall maritime safety. Trafi has also clarified the issue with the shipowner, and no further action is necessary from the perspective of maritime safety.
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs, for its part, is monitoring the situation and will assess it in the light of any additional information.
