President and Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discuss current situation in Ukraine, Russian drone hitting Romania, NATO defence ministers’ meeting and situation in Strait of Hormuz

In their meeting on Friday 29 May, the President of the Republic and the Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy discussed the current situation in Ukraine and the need to continue to provide strong support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia.

The President and the Ministerial Committee discussed a Russian drone hitting an apartment block in Romania. Finland condemns Russia’s actions and strongly supports its ally Romania as well as Ukraine in its defence against Russia’s war of aggression.

The President and the Ministerial Committee discussed the meeting of NATO Defence Ministers to be held in Brussels on 18 June.

In addition, the President and the Ministerial Committee discussed the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of Finland contributing to a multinational mission, which is being planned under the leadership of the United Kingdom and France, to secure the area when conditions permit.

The President and the Ministerial Committee also received an update on cooperation between Finland and the United States in economy, technology and security.

The President and the Ministerial Committee were also presented with the Security Committee’s annual report on the security of society. They also discussed bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation after receiving an update on the topic.
