Prime Minister Katainen in Copenhagen: A fair EU with common rules
On 6 May, Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen visited Copenhagen where he met his Danish counterpart Helle Thorning-Schmidt. The premiers discussed key EU issues including preparations for the May European Council. The prominent theme was the EU's economic situation.
"Although Denmark is not a euro country, it participates very actively in the development of the banking union and efforts to improve the EU's economic situation as whole through promoting free trade and the development of the EU single market."
Prime Minister Katainen gave a speech at the Danish Foreign Policy Society on Fair Europe, Strong Member States. In his speech, Prime Minister Katainen emphasised the importance on fair and just integration.
"In terms of the EU's legitimacy, it is crucial that citizens feel part of a just community based on rules that guarantee equal opportunities for everyone. Everyone should also work towards preventing the EU Member States from splitting into artificial blocs based on either their financial management or some other single policy sector. We simply cannot afford that," Katainen said.
Prime Minister Katainen also met representatives of the Finnish Cultural Institute and Finpro in Copenhagen.
