Prime Minister Orpo and Estonian Prime Minister Michal to meet in Helsinki
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal will meet in Helsinki on 13–14 August. The prime ministers will have a bilateral meeting on 13 August and a more extensive meeting with their delegations on 14 August. The meetings will focus on cooperation between Estonia and Finland, along with topical security issues and EU affairs.
The premiers will discuss cooperation between their countries in areas such as digitalisation, energy and the defence industry. They will also discuss comprehensive support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion. Topical NATO issues, security in the Baltic Sea and border security will also be on the agenda. In addition, the prime ministers will discuss the priorities of the new European Commission and other topical issues related to the EU.
Michal has served as Prime Minister of Estonia since July 2024. He succeeded the previous Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, when she was nominated to serve as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. This is Prime Minister Michal’s first visit abroad as Prime Minister. Orpo and Michal had a telephone conversation on 23 July. The fact that Prime Minister Michal chose Prime Minister Orpo as the first head of state to call following his appointment serves as a good illustration of the close and confidential relationship between Finland and Estonia.
While in Helsinki, Prime Minister Michal will also meet with President of the Republic Alexander Stubb.
