Internal border controls to be reinstated during #HELSINKI2018 meeting

Publication date 13.7.2018 11.14
Press release 82/2018

Finland will reinstate temporary border controls at its internal EU borders to support the security arrangements for the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Internal border controls will start on Friday 13 July at 12.00 and end on Tuesday 17 July at 12.00. The Finnish Government decided on 13 July that temporary border controls be reinstated at the internal borders.

The aim with this is to make sure that foreign nationals travelling to or from Finland fulfil the conditions for entry into or stay in the country as laid down by law and to identify persons who might pose a risk.

Internal border controls will not be carried out on all passengers. They will be targeted at passengers in accordance with the threat and risk assessments made jointly by the internal security authorities. A particular focus will be on Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and the Ports of Helsinki and Turku.

The existing legislation still applies during the temporary reinstatement of internal border controls. Passengers are not required to carry any additional travel documents when crossing the internal borders. The only change is that all passengers should be prepared for possible border controls and immigration monitoring at the internal borders, too.

The Border Guard is responsible for reinstating temporary border controls at the internal borders.

What does the reinstating of border controls on Schengen internal traffic mean?
