28.5.2026 | On 28 May 2026, the Government proposed the approval of the national provisions supplementing the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The legislation will enter into force on 1 June 2026, with transitional periods aligned with those of the CRA during 2026–2027. The aim of the CRA is to improve the cybersecurity of products.

16.1.2025 | On 16 January 2025, the Government appointed Tomi Lounema (M.Sc. Engineering) as Director General of the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) for the period of 1 February 2025–31 January 2030.

30.7.2025 | During the summer, there have been significantly more drownings and serious near misses than usual at public swimming areas. The Ministry of the Interior, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes), the National Police Board of Finland and the Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation met on 30 July to discuss safety at swimming areas.

13.11.2025 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic approve amendments to the Rail Transport Act and the Act on Transport Services on 14 November 2025. The amendments will enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and allow more time to procure rolling stock that meets EU requirements for use in the forest and chemicals industries.

27.11.2025 | The Government submitted a legislative proposal for the national implementation of the European Union’s new Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) to Parliament on 27 November 2025.

12.6.2025 | On 12 June 2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament to amend the Rail Transport Act and the Act on Transport Services. The amendments would enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport. They would provide more time to procure rolling stock that meets the EU requirements for the use of the forest and chemicals industries.

9.1.2026 | Finland has sent material assistance to Ukraine from the EU-funded rescEU strategic stockpile for the third time. The deployment from Finland included supplies to respond to chemical, biological and radiological threats, as well as medical items.

22.1.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications requests comments on a draft government proposal that would amend the regulation concerning rail transport. The legislative amendments would enhance the safety and security of urban rail transport and give an extension of time to the forest and chemicals industries for procuring rolling stock that meets the EU requirements. The deadline for submitting comments is 5 March 2025. 

22.12.2021 | The Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act will be amended as of 31 December 2021. The legislative amendments will complement the implementation of EU legislation in national legislation.

23.9.2024 | The Government submitted its budget proposal for 2025 to Parliament on Monday 23 September. The budget proposal includes proposals on the central government productivity programme in accordance with the Government Programme and the spring 2024 government session on spending limits.

20.12.2024 | The start of 2025 will see the entry into force of new acts and decrees. The most important changes in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment are summarised below.

7.10.2021 | On 7 October 2021, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal to amend the Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act.

8.1.2025 | Finland has for the first time delivered assistance from an EU-funded rescEU stockpile to a country that has requested assistance. This week, a truckload of personal protective equipment and chemical detectors was delivered to Ukraine to respond to the needs of the country's rescue services.

17.3.2025 | Finland will host Rescue Borealis 2025, a Nordic exercise focusing on the Euro-Arctic cross-border cooperation involving rescue services in Finland, Sweden and Norway. Rescue Borealis 2025 includes a field training exercise that will take place near Oulu between 29 September and 3 October 2025.

18.1.2023 | The revised EU Drinking Water Directive has been implemented in Finnish national legislation through statutory amendments that took effect on 12 January 2023. These amendments concern a wide range of laws and regulations. The main goal of the reform is to safeguard the quality of water intended for human consumption and to provide more information on water quality.

10.6.2021 | Kimmo Peltonen will continue as Director General of the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2026. The Government decided on the appointment on 10 June 2021.

28.10.2021 | The EU already requires that footwear and textile products clearly indicate what material the item is made of.  The Government now proposes to Parliament legislation based on the EU Market Surveillance Regulation, which would specify companies’ obligations related to labelling of materials. The proposed law also enables the imposition of penalty payments for incorrect or deficient labelling. 

20.12.2023 | Additional common EU reserves will be established in Finland. The new reserves will contain supplies such as medicines, medical supplies and medical devices, and they are part of the rescEU project. Finland has received a total of EUR 305 million in funding from the European Commission for the establishment of the reserves

28.2.2019 | The Ministry of the Interior requested local rescue departments to conduct a survey on the safety of exiting so-called escape rooms in their area. The survey was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency TUKES that monitors the safety of consumer services in Finland. The motivation for the survey was a fire in an escape room in Poland in the beginning of January that killed 5 people and left one severely injured.

17.1.2023 | The European Commission is funding the EU’s first chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear strategic reserve in Finland, under rescEU, which includes personal protective equipment, measuring equipment, pharmaceuticals and antibodies in Finland for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear accidents.
