30.3.2023 | On 30 March 2023, the Government granted Fortum Power and Heat Oy an operating licence for the disposal facility for low and intermediate level waste, located in the Loviisa power plant area. The new licence, which will be in force until 2090, will replace the current one expiring in 2055.

Mäkinen proposes that Finland should take Sweden’s Samhall company as a model, but adapt it to the Finnish needs.

However, a new kind of intermediate labour market, a social economy and social entrepreneurship can offer solutions that improve the employment of people with impaired capacity to work.

8.6.2026 | Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie has presented seven State Awards for Public Information in acknowledgment of the dissemination of significant public information. The award ceremony will be celebrated on 8 June in Oulu, which is a European Capital of Culture this year.

22.9.2025 | Employment services and the service process for jobseekers will be reformed to better meet individual needs, in line with the Programme of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government. The aim is that more people would find employment quicker. The Government proposes amendments to the legislation on the service process of jobseekers and the jobseeker profiles. At the same time, the sanctions system for unemployment security will be overhauled.

25.2.2025 | Starting on 1 March 2025, the Development and Administrative Services Centre (KEHA Centre) will be responsible for the Employment Service Statistics. The statistics contain key data on unemployed jobseekers, job vacancies and public employment services. Until now, it has been the task of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment to maintain, develop and communicate about them.

One of the proposed regulations concerns digital services and the other concerns the digital market. 4.6.2026 | The Government is proposing a new type of integration assistance. The general social security benefit would be paid as integration assistance to immigrants registered as unemployed jobseekers who do not meet the prior work requirement or have lived in Finland for less than three years.

15.4.2026 | Kuopion Energia Oy has submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme concerning its plan to build a small nuclear power plant in Kuopio for district heating production. The EIA programme is a plan prepared by the party responsible for the project that details the necessary analyses and organisation of the environmental impact assessment procedure.
