14.1.2026 | Finland’s withdrawal from the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction (Ottawa Convention) took effect on 10 January 2026. The Finnish defence administration will start planning the reintroduction of anti-personnel mines into the range of Finland’s defence capabilities.

12.2.2026 | The Sokli deposit in Savukoski is one of Europe’s most significant sources of rare earth elements. Its phosphate reserves are estimated to cover up to one fifth of the European Union’s phosphate needs.

15.4.2026 | Finland and Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will strengthen their bilateral collaboration especially in marine industry and Arctic matters. The MoU was signed by Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto and Canada’s Minister of Industry Melanie Joly in Ottawa on 14 April 2026.

6.11.2025 | On 6.11.2025, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament on amending the Mining Act. The proposal would specify the obstacles to granting an exploration permit. In this context, provisions would also be laid down on compensations to safeguard the rights of landowners in situations where activities under the Mining Act continue on their land.

The main theme of the meeting will be responsible mining and the clean transition.

22.12.2021 | The Act on the Safe Handling and Storage of Dangerous Chemicals and Explosives, the Mining Act and the Nuclear Energy Act will be amended as of 31 December 2021. The legislative amendments will complement the implementation of EU legislation in national legislation.

9.6.2023 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment publishes outlook reports on the current and future situation of specific sectors. On 9 June 2023, we published an outlook report for the food and mining sectors, in which we address the factors and trends shaping the development of these sectors.

8.9.2021 | Finland supports the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) by EUR 3.6 million between 2021 and 2023 to develop value chains in sustainable forestry, mining and circular economy and to create jobs in developing countries. The project also includes a section strengthening the position of women and promoting gender equality in the work of UNIDO. The agreement was signed in Vienna on 8 September.

8.9.2022 | The Government proposed amendments to the Mining Act on 8 September 2022. The amendments will improve the opportunities of influence among local residents and increase business prospects and environmental considerations.

14.11.2025 | The President of the Republic has granted the annual internationalisation awards to three companies and one community. Orion Corporation won the 2025 Growth Company Award. The Newcomer Company Award went to Sensofusion, and Sandvik Mining and Construction was recognised as the Long-term International Investor. The year’s Community Award was granted to the Finnish Startup Community.

27.4.2026 | Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio will lead a Team Finland trade mission to Australia and New Zealand between 28 April and 5 May 2026.

20.11.2025 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the European Union–African Union Summit in Angola on 24–25 November. From there, Prime Minister Orpo will continue on to South Africa, where he will take part in a trade mission promoting bilateral relations between Finland and South Africa on 26–27 November.
