22.1.2026 | In its meeting on Thursday 22 January, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs discussed the informal European Council, economic support for Ukraine and military mobility.

8.5.2026 | In his EU policy speech at Aalto University on Friday 8 May, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo stressed that Europe and the European Union are still the best guarantee of security for citizens in an unstable global situation. He noted, however, that Europe needs to be much stronger in order to defend its values.

6.3.2026 | In its meeting on 6 March, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs outlined Finland's positions on the revised EU Cybersecurity Act. The ministerial committee also discussed progress on the Savings and Investments Union and outlined Finland’s positions for next week’s council meetings.

19.3.2025 | At its meeting on Wednesday 19 March, the Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the March European Council and Euro Summit (20–21 March) and on the EU High Representative’s proposal for increasing military support to Ukraine, which will be discussed at the European Council.

19.12.2025 | In a meeting that began on Thursday 18 December, the EU leaders reached an agreement on significant additional funding for Ukraine. In line with the agreement, the European Council will provide a EUR 90 billion loan to Ukraine for 2026 and 2027.

29.11.2024 | At its meeting on Friday 29 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs received an update on the EU’s climate targets and outlined Finland’s positions on the Commission’s proposal for a directive to harmonise insolvency law.

23.5.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 23 May, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on the possible use of proceeds from frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. The ministerial committee also discussed Finland’s positions on the simplification of the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy and the topics of several upcoming council meetings.

6.11.2024 | It its meeting on Wednesday 6 November, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions for the informal meeting of the members of the European Council on 8 November and the meeting of the European Political Community to be held in connection with it on 7 November. The Ministerial Committee on EU Affairs also discussed the EU’s multiannual financial framework and migration issues.

28.8.2025 | At the Europe Forum in Turku, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo took part in a discussion marking the 30th anniversary of Finland’s EU membership. Prime Minister Orpo also delivered an opening speech at the event. His key message was that today, we need the European Union more than ever. And the European Union needs Finland more than ever.

23.6.2025 | The EU General Affairs Council (GAC) will meet in Luxembourg on Tuesday 24 June to prepare for the June European Council. The ministers will also continue their annual rule of law dialogue with a country-specific discussion on the rule of law situation in Finland. Minister for European Affairs and Ownership Steering Joakim Strand will represent Finland at the meeting.

22.4.2026 | Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s Government has agreed on the General Government Fiscal Plan for 2027–2030. Both the global economy and Finland’s finances are facing challenges. In its spending limits session, the Government focused on new targeted measures to strengthen people’s confidence in the future and improve the conditions for growth and employment.

6.6.2025 | In its meeting on Friday 6 June, the Ministerial Committee on European Union Affairs outlined Finland’s positions on two proposals put forth by the Commission: one aiming to establish a common list of safe countries of origin and another to improve the availability, supply and production of critical medicines in the EU. In addition, the Ministerial Committee specified Finland’s positions on the last phase of negotiations on the EU pharmaceuticals package.

8.11.2024 | In its informal meeting on 8 November in Budapest, Hungary, the European Council adopted a declaration highlighting the need to strengthen the EU’s economy and competitiveness. The leaders of the EU Member States also discussed EU-US relations and the situation in Georgia. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo represented Finland at the meeting.
