25.2.2025 | Starting on 1 March 2025, the Development and Administrative Services Centre (KEHA Centre) will be responsible for the Employment Service Statistics. The statistics contain key data on unemployed jobseekers, job vacancies and public employment services. Until now, it has been the task of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment to maintain, develop and communicate about them.

11.1.2024 | The Government proposes that the President of the Republic adopt the acts nationally implementing the EU Digital Services Act, which aims to improve the transparency and safety of online intermediary services for users.

24.11.2021 | The EU Competitiveness Council meeting in Brussels on 25−26 November will focus on the regulation of activities of the largest digital companies and improvements to safety of users of various online intermediation services. The agenda for space issues includes the financing of companies in the sector and the management of space transport.

19.3.2020 | The Government proposes a new act on a prohibition procedure concerning online intermediation services and search engines. The act is based on an EU regulation, which lays down provisions on the relationship between online platforms and the companies using these in their business operations. In practice, the regulation means that, among other things, search engines must make information about matters affecting the order of search results available to companies.

12.6.2020 | A new act on a prohibition procedure concerning online intermediation services and search engines will enter into force on 12 July 2020. The act is based on an EU regulation aimed at promoting the transparency of online platforms and search engines.

4.2.2021 | The European Commission has submitted two legislative proposals aimed at making the digital environment safer and fairer for consumers and businesses. One of the proposed regulations concerns digital services and the other concerns the digital market. Finland supports the objectives of the proposed regulations and suggests some clarifications for further preparation.

25.2.2020 | A total of 251,700 unemployed jobseekers were registered at the Employment and Economic Development Offices at the end of January, showing a year-on-year increase of 200. The number of unemployed jobseekers decreased by 6,000 from the previous month. The figures are from the Employment Service Statistics of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

9.2.2021 | At the request of Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen, Director General of Finnish Customs Hannu Mäkinen has formulated a proposal to improve the opportunities of people with partial work ability to find employment. Mäkinen proposes that Finland should take Sweden’s Samhall company as a model, but adapt it to the Finnish needs.

18.11.2021 | The low employment rate of people with impaired capacity to work is a common problem in the Nordic countries. However, a new kind of intermediate labour market, a social economy and social entrepreneurship can offer solutions that improve the employment of people with impaired capacity to work.

12.2.2024 | On 12 February 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment published a report on the changes to the distribution obligation of transport fuels. AFRY Management Consulting Oy produced the report on behalf of the Ministry. The report’s purpose was to evaluate the effects of the proposed changes to the distribution obligation outlined in the Government Programme.

The near-term outlook of companies has been negatively affected by Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and the rising prices fuelled by the war. 16.6.2022 | The board of directors of Työkanava Oy has appointed Sari Nikkola as the company’s chief executive. She will start in the position on 1 September 2022.

22.11.2022 | According to a comprehensive report on exports to China, Finnish companies’ business activities in China have had a positive impact on the parent companies’ activities in Finland. However, Finland has lost its market share of the value added consumed by China, and the focus of goods exports has shifted from machinery and equipment to raw materials and intermediate products. The outlook for exports is overshadowed by geopolitical risks, protectionism and a slowdown in China’s economic growth.

3.7.2023 | The Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is meeting in London from 3–7 July 2023. The 80th session of the MEPC is expected to adopt a revised IMO greenhouse gas strategy. The meeting will also discuss global solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships and the regulation of ships’ energy efficiency and ballast water management.

16.2.2023 | On 16 February 2023, the Government granted an operating licence to Fortum Power and Heat Oy (Fortum) for nuclear power plants units Loviisa 1 (LO1) and Loviisa 2 (LO2), in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Act. The new operating licence allows energy production at the nuclear power plant units until the end of 2050. The current operating licences for Loviisa expire on 31 December 2027 (LO1) and 31 December 2030 (LO2).

11.2.2022 | The new EU regional and structural policy programming period will further accelerate the development of urban innovation ecosystems and launch national innovation and skills network activity. On 10 February 2022, the Government allocated a total of approximately EUR 21.6 million of Innovation and Skills in Finland programme funding for the implementation of ecosystem agreements and approximately EUR 6.9 million for the launch of a national innovation and skills network in 2022.
