13.5.2026 | The Government proposed on 13 May 2026 that the amendments to the Driving Licence Act be adopted. For the most part, the Act will enter into force on 29 May 2026. The aim of the amendments is to improve traffic safety for young people in particular.

22.9.2025 | The Ministry of Education and Culture’s proportion of the 2026 budget proposal is EUR 8.9 billion, which is some EUR 4.4 million more than in the 2025 Budget. Despite continued pressure on general government finances, the proposal maintains investment in education, research and competence.

27.10.2025 | The Ministry of Transport and Communications is inviting comments on a draft government proposal to amend the Driving Licence Act. The proposal aims to improve road safety for young people. Comments may be submitted until 14 December 2025.

30.1.2025 | A working group preparing an overhaul of student financial aid has assessed the current situation in student financial aid and key development needs in the student financial aid system. Needs for development that were deemed essential include reinstating indexation and restructuring interest assistance and loan granting practices to improve the security of student loans. The working group's proposals were submitted to Minister Sandra Bergqvist on 30 January.

13.3.2025 | On 13 March 2025, Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne and Norway’s Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård signed an agreement in Oslo, Norway, on taxi transport services between the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Norway. The agreement permits taxi transport services between Finland and Norway.

With the memorial, the Government honours former president Koivisto’s memory and extensive life’s work.

Economic growth driven by the private sector will also serve to secure the financing base for central government finances. The fast-acting measures to curb indebtedness that were decided on due to the difficult situation in central government finances will move forward.

1.2.2024 | On 1 February 2024, the Government submitted to Parliament a Union communication on the European Commission's proposal on the implementation of passenger rights in the European Union. The Government largely supports the Commission's proposal.

7.12.2022 | EU home affairs ministers will gather in Brussels on Thursday 8 December for a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council. 8.12.2022 | On 8 December 2022, the Government issued a decree under which regional transport subsidies will continue in 2023‒2025. The subsidy will remain largely the same as before. Regional transport subsidy will reduce the freight costs caused by long transport distances of products manufactured by SMEs operating in sparsely populated areas. This will improve the competitiveness of companies and support their business activities.
