27.6.2025 | The clean energy transition is progressing at a good pace, thanks in part to the emissions trading system. However, reaching Finland’s climate targets will require more action in the effort sharing sector, and especially in the land use sector where emissions increased compared to the previous year.

9.4.2026 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received eight applications for investment aid for biogenic carbon dioxide capture projects by the deadline of 31 March 2026. The amount of aid applied totals EUR 101 million.

5.12.2024 | On 5 December 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received an environmental impact assessment (EIA) report from Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO). The report assesses the environmental effects of a potential extension to the service life of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units as well as an increase to their thermal power.

23.1.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has sent for comments an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) concerning the continued operation of Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units in Eurajoki. TVO submitted the EIA programme to the Ministry in January. The deadline for submitting comments is 25 March 2024.

19.3.2020 | On 19 March 2020, the Finnish Government issued a decree on investment aid for projects accelerating the replacement of coal in energy production. The aid is intended to promote voluntary phase-out of coal use by the end of 2025. Coal-based power and heat generation will be banned in Finland as of 1 May 2029

27.3.2020 | Finland has decided to restrict border traffic to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Because of the emergency situation, many agriculture and horticulture enterprise will not be getting the necessary seasonal workforce from abroad.

2.12.2025 | The first evaluations have been published on the preliminary impacts and results of Finland’s CAP Strategic Plan. The evaluations analysed the results and impact achieved related to the entrepreneurial income and competitiveness of agriculture, animal welfare, the biodiversity of agricultural environments and emissions from agriculture. The evaluations also contain recommendations for developing the CAP Strategic Plan and the next policy period.

5.1.2024 | On 5 January 2024, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received from Teollisuuden Voima Oyj an environmental impact assessment (EIA) programme referred to in the Act on the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure. The programme concerns extending the service life of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units located in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant area in Eurajoki as well as increasing their thermal output.

16.2.2023 | On 16 February 2023, the Government granted an operating licence to Fortum Power and Heat Oy (Fortum) for nuclear power plants units Loviisa 1 (LO1) and Loviisa 2 (LO2), in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Act. The new operating licence allows energy production at the nuclear power plant units until the end of 2050. The current operating licences for Loviisa expire on 31 December 2027 (LO1) and 31 December 2030 (LO2).

9.12.2025 | The Ministry of the Interior has procured 50,000 litres of foam suitable for extinguishing different types of fires for use by Ukraine’s rescue services. The foam purchase is part of an emergency assistance package coordinated by the Ministry through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The package consists of donations from various sectors of society and targeted procurements.

12.1.2026 | In order to promote the capture of biogenic carbon dioxide, the Government has decided to grant investment aid totalling EUR 90 million for the construction of capture capacity. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has now launched a call for applications for the competitive bidding process for the investment aid. Applications can be submitted at Business Finland’s e-service portal no later than 31 March 2026.

14.11.2025 | The President of the Republic has granted the annual internationalisation awards to three companies and one community. Orion Corporation won the 2025 Growth Company Award. The Newcomer Company Award went to Sensofusion, and Sandvik Mining and Construction was recognised as the Long-term International Investor. The year’s Community Award was granted to the Finnish Startup Community.

24.5.2022 | On 24 May 2022, Fennovoima Oy submitted to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment a notification by which it cancels the construction licence application concerning the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant. The company announced on 2 May 2022 that it has terminated the plant delivery contract concluded with Russian RAOS Project.

1.6.2021 | Finland, as the driving force behind the International Year of Plant Health 2020, has also been crucially involved in the production of one of its key legacy accomplishments – the development of a scientific review study “Climate-change impacts on plant pests: a global challenge to prevent and mitigate plant-pest risks in agriculture, forestry and ecosystems”.

16.6.2022 | “Terrafame’s battery chemicals plant is a good example of how we are developing the Finnish mining and battery industry towards production of higher value added. Finland is introducing advanced processes and technologies and improving competences in a new area that will enable a responsible green transition,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä said at the opening of the plant in Sotkamo on 16 June 2022.

30.11.2021 | Under the migratory fish programme NOUSU led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the State of Finland contributes to the restoration of the Virtaankoski Rapid in the River Tainionvirta that discharges into Päijänne, the second largest lake in Finland. The regulating dam of the small-scale hydropower plant will be demolished to free the river. The company that owns the power plant will be transferred to Hiitolanjoki Voima Oy at the beginning of 2022.
