Projects and reports

FINBEPOL carries out research projects and pilots in cooperation with administration experts and researchers to collect important information about socially relevant issues.

Current projects and development activities

Psychological resilience

Psychological resilience can be supported in many ways, including communication. Studies suggest that communication can help reduce the fear of stigma associated with preparedness, reinforce its various dimensions and clarify recommendations for action. One of the focus areas of the FINBEPOL team is to strengthen psychological resilience as part of comprehensive security.

Regional development

In an ongoing project, FINBEPOL is assessing the motivations and opportunities for moving to sparsely populated areas and the archipelago, and producing additional research on the subject by using behavioural science.

Sustainable development

An ongoing project explores ways to improve the recycling and sorting of biowaste. The project aims to make the sorting of biowaste efficient in catering services across Finland. FINBEPOL participated in the development of a climate and nature barometer by conducting behavioural mapping, a Citizen Pulse Survey and a micro-narrative analysis of citizens’ attitudes towards climate issues.

Economy

In an ongoing project, FINBEPOL is conducting a study to gain insights into over-indebtedness from a behavioural science perspective. The information produced can be used in the prevention of over-indebtedness.

Information interference

In an ongoing project, FINBEPOL is participating in strengthening the capacity to better understand the risks of information interference and is applying a behavioural science approach to find the most efficient ways to prevent harm.

Foreign and security policy

In an ongoing project, FINBEPOL is participating in a project run by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence that studies young people’s values and attitudes towards foreign and security policy.

Sludge audits

Sludge audits are multi-step assessments of people’s behaviour in service processes to help identify, reduce and prevent unnecessary friction and psychological strain, i.e. sludge, related to the use of services. In a 2024–2027 project concerning sludge audits in digital public services, the Prime Minister’s Office and the OECD will strengthen various stakeholders’ capacity to conduct sludge audits, develop the capacity to implement recommendations received from the audits, and conduct sludge audits to improve the efficiency and user-friendliness of digital public services.

Reports

FINBEPOL has studied current topics relevant to citizens, applying a behavioural science approach. Its reports aim to produce information to support preparation and decision-making in public administration.
