On 13 September, the Government decided to nominate MEP Petri Sarvamaa, Bachelor of Social Sciences, as Finland’s candidate for member of the European Court of Auditors for the term beginning on 1 June 2024.

He has been a Member of the European Parliament since 2012. He has been an active member of the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee and Budget Committee. Sarvamaa has been the EPP coordinator in the Committee on Budgetary Control and vice-chair of the EPP Group in the Committee on Budgetary Control. Prior to becoming an MEP, Sarvamaa had a long career as a journalist at the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE.

The European Court of Auditors audits EU revenue and expenditure. One of its main duties is to submit an annual report on the previous financial year to the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union.

Each Member State has a national representative at the Court of Auditors. The Council of the European Union appoints members to the Court for a six-year term after having consulted the European Parliament. Members of the Court carry out their duties independently and in the common interest of the entire European Union.
