Denmark joins the Finnish-led Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme. The Danish Ministry of Defence announced the accession decision in its press release of 1.4.2025. The purpose of the CAVS programme is to develop the 6 x 6 Armoured Vehicle System to meet the common requirements and needs of the participating countries.

Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen welcomes Denmark's swift decision and accession to the programme. "The CAVS programme is a success story for cooperation between the Finnish Defence administration and the Defence industry. It started between the Finnish and Latvian Defence Ministries and has now grown into a multinational, significant European programme also thanks to the Ministry's effective export promotion measures," Häkkänen says. "Denmark is very welcome to join the co-operation."

Denmark joins the joint procurement programme as the fifth country in addition to Finland, Latvia, Sweden and Germany. In the first stage of the accession process, the CAVS participating countries and Denmark will sign an appendix to the CAVS arrangement, after which Denmark will be able to join commercial agreements enabling series purchases of CAVS vehicles.

Denmark says that the planned acquisition of CAVS vehicles will strengthen the country's national defence capability. Denmark also sees CAVS programme as a very effective form of co-operation between the Nordic countries. Denmark plans to purchase a total of 130 CAVS vehicles from Patria. Th Finnish Patria 6 x 6 vehicle type has already been chosen as the basis for the joint programme. In the ongoing research and development phase of the project, several different vehicle variants and the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC itself) have been developed.

The value of the Danish procurement is approximately DKK 1.9 billion, approximately 250 million euros. Denmark is planning to purchase a smaller batch of vehicles this year and a larger batch next year.

"The CAVS programme, led by the Finnish Defence administration, is an excellent example of joint materiel procurement that benefits European countries extensively, as evidenced by the 60 million euros EDIRPA funding (European Defence industry reporting through Common Procurement Act) granted to the programme," says Minister Häkkänen.

The funding will enable, among other things, the allocation of resources to the administration of the CAVS programme and the development of cooperation to meet the needs of expanding programme. The CAVS participating countries will benefit from the funding jointly, in accordance with the programme's objectives.
