NATO Glossary and Swedish Legal Language in Finland glossary update published in Valter Termbank

Publication date 17.4.2024 13.26

The Translation and Language Division of the Prime Minister's Office has published new content in the Finnish Government Termbank Valter. NATO Glossary was introduced in Valter as a new glossary. The glossary forming a part of the updated handbook Swedish Legal Language in Finland was also now published in Valter.

A revised edition of the legal language handbook Svenskt lagspråk i Finland (Slaf) – Swedish Legal Language in Finland has been published. The handbook’s primary target groups are translators and those who revise or draft legislation. The handbook was updated by a working group appointed by the Swedish Language Board, which included representatives from the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Swedish Office of Parliament and the Institute for the Languages of Finland. The glossary of the handbook contains frequently used words and expressions in Finnish legal texts and recommendations for their equivalents in Swedish. The Glossary update published in Valter has now around 1,900 terms and expressions.

The NATO Glossary gives recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English NATO terms. The glossary describes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), its organization structure and its functions. The NATO Glossary was prepared in Finland in a terminology project, which was set up in January 2023 by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office to find common recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of terms used in NATO. Project participants included experts and language specialists from Finnish ministries, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Institute for the Languages of Finland. The glossary was circulated for comments among partners in Finland, Sweden, the Permanent Representation of Finland to NATO, and the Finnish and Swedish language units of the Council of the European Union. The glossary contains names of organizations in NATO’s political and military structure, titles used in NATO and in relations with NATO, key concepts related to NATO's purpose, defence planning, actors and operating environment and names of key agreements. In addition to the online version in the Valter termbank, NATO Glossary is available in PDF format.
