The Translation and Language Division of the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office has published a new edition of the NATO Glossary with nearly a hundred new concepts and their translations. A team of language specialists is working to extend the glossary in consultation with experts. The glossary gives recommendations for the Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English names, titles and terms used in the NATO context. Useful comments have been received from the team’s cooperation partners from Finland, Sweden and the European Union.

The new sections now added to the glossary cover terms for various types of operations and exercises, for example ‘defensive counter-air operation’ and ‘crisis management exercise, CMX’. The glossary also provides definitions and terms for concepts related to military commanders’ authority and command and control relationships, such as ‘operational command, OPCOM’ or ‘tactical control, TACON’. Updated organization names of NATO Headquarters’ International Staff and new titles at political strategic level have also been added.

The older glossary content includes names of organizations within NATO’s political and military structures; titles; key concepts related to NATO’s core tasks, actors, operating environment, defence planning and military presence; and the names of key NATO agreements and document types.

The glossary now contains around 340 entries, and new terms will be added later.

The new edition of the NATO Glossary is now available online in the Government Termbank Valter. It can also be downloaded as a PDF file under Glossaries and guidance on the website of the Finnish Government.
