Third edition of NATO Glossary concludes terminology project
The NATO Glossary, prepared in a terminology project set up by the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office, gives recommendations for Finnish and Swedish equivalents of English NATO terms. The terminology project was concluded with the publication of a third edition of the glossary.
The NATO Glossary was created by experts and language specialists from the Finnish ministries, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Institute for the Languages of Finland. It has been circulated for comments among partners in Finland, Sweden and the European Union.
The third edition features new concepts on crisis management, actors, operating environment and NATO’s defence planning. The glossary now also has a list of key treaties and agreements. The earlier editions included names of organisations in NATO’s political and military structure, political and military titles used in the NATO context, and key concepts related to NATO’s core tasks, approaches to security, and arms control. Many of the concepts include a definition in English, Finnish and Swedish.
The NATO Glossary now contains nearly 220 terms. New terms will be added later. The terminology work will continue in consultation with experts.
