Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the European Council on 21–22 March and the Euro Summit to be held in connection with the Council meeting. On 21 March, the Prime Minister will also attend the first-ever Nuclear Energy Summit.

The European Council will focus on support for Ukraine, security and defence and the situation in the Middle East. Other topics on the agenda will include EU enlargement, external relations, migration, agriculture and the European Semester. The leaders of the EU Member States will also have a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“At the European Council, I will stress the need for the EU to continue and increase its strong support for Ukraine. Russia’s war of aggression has fundamentally changed the security situation in Europe. This means we also need to deepen EU defence cooperation and strengthen the European defence industry. One way to achieve this is through a new Finland-led initiative of 14 Member States aiming to strengthen the role of the European Investment Bank in supporting European defence,” says Prime Minister Orpo.

The Euro Summit will focus on the economic situation in the euro area and the future of the European capital markets union.

Before the European Council, Prime Minister Orpo will attend a Nuclear Energy Summit convened by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The summit will highlight the role of nuclear energy as a form of sustainable energy production globally.
