8.4.2026 | The Ministry of the Interior will allocate around EUR 44 million in EU funding to projects on border management, crime prevention and migration. The projects will improve the capabilities of security authorities, develop information systems, and secure resources for the authorities to manage migration. The funding will be granted from the EU Home Affairs Funds, under the autumn 2025 call for proposals.

11.7.2024 | On Thursday 11 July, the Government issued a resolution on the Action Plan for the Prevention and Combating of Violent Radicalisation and Violent Extremism.

18.2.2021 | According to the annual report, work on preventing violent extremism and radicalisation has proceeded well despite the coronavirus pandemic.

19.12.2019 | The Government has issued a resolution on the national action plan 2019–2023 for the prevention of violent radicalisation and extremism. The action plan aims to reduce extremist violence and its threat to individuals, communities and society, and to promote equality, freedom of expression and other constitutional rights.

19.6.2024 | In its meeting on Wednesday 19 June, the Government received a briefing from the police on the stabbings in Oulu. The police are investing two stabbings that took place at the Valkea shopping centre in Oulu on Thursday 13 June and Tuesday 18 June. According to the police, there are indications that both incidents were racially motivated. The suspect in the first incident has a history of right-wing extremism.

17.11.2022 | The Government has adopted a resolution on the National Counter-Terrorism Strategy for 2022–2025. The Strategy sets out the strategic counter-terrorism objectives and actions and supports sustained and broad cooperation among all those involved in counter-terrorism. This is an update to the previous strategy and it does not contain any significant new strategic guidelines.

10.12.2021 | On Friday 10 December 2021, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs repatriated a Finnish mother and her four children from Syria. All five had previously been in the al-Hol camp. They are now in the care of competent Finnish authorities.

27.5.2019 | Prevention of violent radicalisation and extremism in Finland is based on joint efforts by public authorities and other bodies. The aim is to produce services that help people who have become or are in the process of becoming radicalised disengage with violence. These services are provided by a wide range of government agencies and non-governmental organisations.

16.4.2020 | Different parts of Finland are reporting engagement in activities by violent extremist movements. Violent non-parliamentary far right movements are active in the areas of all police departments. In some areas, there are also reports of activities of violent non-parliamentary far left groups, mainly anarchists and anti-fascists. These conclusions are presented in the new situation overview of violent extremism.

27.1.2022 | On Holocaust Remembrance Day, which Finland observes as the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Persecution, we remember the lives lost to the destructive forces of intolerance, hatred and violence. In taking this moment to reflect on our collective grief, we look back on the past. This day reminds us of a painful part of our history and calls on us to bear responsibility for eradicating hate speech, racism and especially antisemitism – Europe’s original sin.

12.8.2020 | The Ministry of the Interior has set up a working group tasked with identifying security threats to the premises of religious communities and drawing up proposals for improving safety and security.

12.11.2020 | An informal meeting of EU home affairs ministers will be held via video conference on Friday 13 November. The topics on the agenda are the fight against terrorism and the reform of migration and asylum policy. Finland is represented by Minister of the Interior Maria Ohisalo.

26.4.2019 | The Ministry of the Interior coordinates the work preventing violent radicalization and extremism nationally. The work is based on the national action plan, which was verified in spring 2016. The assessment on the implementation of the plan and its objectives and actions is now ready. The assessment was completed by KPMG on the assignment of the Ministry of the Interior.

19.12.2019 | The public authorities are preparing to repatriate two Finnish children from the Syrian al-Hol camp. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will provide detailed information once the children are safe and in the care of the Finnish authorities. Information on their arrival in Finland will be communicated at the earliest opportunity. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs will not publish any information on the children in order to ensure their privacy and security.

8.4.2020 | The Government has concluded its negotiations on the 2021–2024 General Government Fiscal Plan and the second supplementary budget.
