Prime Minister Alexander Stubb will attend the European Council in Brussels on 18 and 19 March. The main item on the meeting agenda is the Energy Union to be discussed on the basis of the Commission's communication published in February.

The Energy Union is one of the priorities of the EU and is closely connected with fostering economic growth, promoting climate objectives and pursuing common foreign and security policy.

"The key goal in the development of the Energy Union is the development of a fully integrated European energy market. A well-functioning internal energy market strengthens energy security and promotes the attainment of climate objectives. I also intend to emphasise the importance of renewable bioenergy," Prime Minister Stubb said prior to the meeting.

The European Council will also discuss issues relating to economic growth, Ukraine and Russia, the Eastern Partnership and the situation in Libya.

On Thursday, prior to the European Council, Prime Minister Stubb will participate in an Energy Union meeting of seven countries.
