MATINE's 30 members represent the fields of science and authorities relevant to its work. The main fields of science are natural sciences, technology, medical and health sciences and social sciences. The authority members represent the Finnish Defence Forces and agencies in the administrative branches of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, and Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

Established in 1961, MATINE is a multidisciplinary network of experts in defence research in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Defence. Its mission is to promote research activities and collaboration in national defence. The network enables dialogue between the scientific community and the defence administration.
