Prime ministers of Finland and Slovakia discuss European security

Slovakian Prime Minister Eduard Heger and Prime Minister Sanna Marin met in Helsinki on Thursday 10 November. Their discussions focused on supporting Ukraine, Finland’s future NATO membership, the energy crisis and education policy.

The prime ministers noted that bilateral relations between Finland and Slovakia are good and straightforward. The countries have cooperated on product development for military vehicles, for example. They have also exchanged information on smart city solutions and digitalisation in public administration. In addition, Finland and Slovakia have explored opportunities for cooperation in areas such as radioactive waste storage.
 
In their discussions, the prime ministers stressed the importance of the international community’s continued strong support for Ukraine. Ukraine is defending itself against Russia’s war of aggression in line with the principles of the UN Charter. Russia’s disinformation and attempts to further escalate the war are irresponsible and very worrying. Russia’s attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine only increase the need for international support and humanitarian aid. The EU must remain united in supporting Ukraine and sustaining pressure on Russia through sanctions. Support for the investigation of war crimes and for accountability mechanisms is of utmost importance.
 
The discussions addressed the current status of Finland and Sweden’s NATO membership process and the importance of their future NATO membership for the entire Alliance.
 
“We greatly appreciate Slovakia’s decision to ratify Finland’s NATO application already in September. We will be an active and reliable Ally. Finland already has a strong partnership with NATO, and full membership is a natural path forward,” Prime Minister Marin says.
 
The prime ministers discussed the EU’s work to find a quick and coordinated solution to the energy crisis caused by Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. At the same time, it is important to accelerate investments in the green transition in order to achieve the carbon neutrality target.
 
The prime ministers also discussed educational policy cooperation between Finland and Slovakia and the fight against violent radicalisation and extremism. In 2018, Slovakia updated its education strategy for 2018–2027. Experts in education services from Finnish universities, companies and cities contributed to the preparation of the strategy.
 
During his visit, Prime Minister Heger also met with President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and visited the University of Helsinki and Aalto University. This was Prime Minister Heger’s first visit to Finland.
