The Ministry of Finance has joined an international collaborative project aimed at establishing certification for ethical applications of artificial intelligence (AI). This is thought to be the first project for creating a framework at global level to recognise trust in AI application processes.

The Ethics Certification Program for Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (ECPAIS) aims at the transparent creation of an ethical certification process for AI. The project was set up by the world’s largest association of technical professionals, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The project focuses especially on transparency, accountability and reducing algorithmic bias in AI.

Responsible practices in AI applications

The project is chaired by Saidot.ai CEO Meeri Haataja, who is also actively involved in the ethical work of the preliminary study on the Aurora national artificial intelligence programme, coordinated by the Ministry of Finance. Finland is well represented on the project, as founder members include not only the Ministry of Finance but also the City of Espoo and the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.

“This is a very significant opportunity for Finland to be involved in the specification of responsible and fair practices for AI applications at an international level. Now is the right time for a broad-based discussion of the technology sector’s ethical rules and of self-regulation, which plays an important role in promoting AI ethics,” says Ministry of Finance Senior Specialist Aleksi Kopponen.

The aim of the two-year project is to publish the first results for use by the technology sector during 2019. More details of the ECPAIS project are available on the project website and in an IEEE press release.
