Minister of Economic Affairs Lintilä to attend UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon

The UN Ocean Conference, which will be held for the second time, brings together representatives of states, researchers, civil society, and businesses to discuss the oceans’ role in climate change mitigation as well as the future of a sustainable blue economy.

Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will lead the Finnish Delegation in the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon on 29 June−1 July 2022. The Finnish delegation includes representatives of the Government, research institutes and companies. The international conference aims to highlight the solutions that scientific innovations and solutions can offer to environmental challenges and sustainable shipping. Finland and Sweden will organise a side event focusing on sustainable maritime logistics. 

Finland will present ten commitments to improve the state of the Baltic Sea at the conference. 

Maritime cluster could become new cornerstone of Finnish economy

At the conference, Lintilä will speak about the blue economy and its significance for economic growth, employment and innovation. He will stress the importance of oceans as carbon sinks and the role of a sustainable blue economy in ensuring the health of oceans. 

“The Finnish maritime cluster is a cooperation network that covers many sectors from ship building to renewable energy, shipping and blue growth. Marine technology is a forerunner in smart solutions and innovations, and sustainable shipping plays a key role in the future,” Lintilä says. 

During his visit, Lintilä will meet Portugal’s Minister of the Economy and Maritime Affairs António Costa Silva, Cape Verde’s Minister Abraão Vicente and other representatives of Portuguese economic life.

He will also visit the European Maritime Safety Agency EMSA.
