Government grants funding for vitality of eastern Finland and an energy plan for Pyhäjoki

On 15 December 2022, the Government granted a total of EUR 950,000 to strengthen eastern Finland’s vitality and capacity for change. In addition, the Government granted EUR 416,000 for an action plan for clean and stable energy production in the Pyhäjoki economic area.

EUR 500,000 for network projects supporting vitality in eastern Finland

The Government granted EUR 500,000 to network projects supporting the vitality of eastern Finland. The funding will be used to improve cooperation in preparedness and security of supply matters between municipalities and regions in eastern Finland and to increase the region’s attractiveness and vitality. In the selection of projects, priority will be given to joint projects of several bodies and those organised across regional boundaries. The Regional Council of Kainuu will organise the call for applications, which is open to all regions of eastern Finland.

Applications will be accepted from 13 December 2022 to 28 February 2023. More detailed instructions on how to apply for funding are available on the website of the Regional Council of Kainuu (in Finnish)

Regional Councils of Kymenlaakso and South Karelia receive funding to promote sustainable growth

The Government granted EUR 250,000 to the Regional Council of Kymenlaakso and EUR 200,000 to the Regional Council of South Karelia. The funding will support the sustainable growth of regions, renewal of business and industry and flexibility for change.  Another objective is to mitigate the regional impacts of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Pyhäjoki economic area granted funding for an energy production action plan

The Council of Oulu Region received EUR 416,000 from the Government to allocate to an action plan for clean and stable energy production in the Pyhäjoki economic area. The municipality of Pyhäjoki and the surrounding economic area made preparations for the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant to be located in the area. Fennovoima announced in May that the construction licence for the plant has been cancelled, which has had an impact on the region’s economy. The funding will be used to assess how the infrastructure already built could be utilised, to explore opportunities for new energy investments and to create a roadmap.
