Markku Mantila appointed as Director of Government Communications
On Thursday, 11 September, the Government appointed Markku Mantila, Master of Social Sciences, to the position of Director General of the Government Communications Department at the Prime Minister’s Office for a fixed term 1.11.2014–31.10.2019. The Director General of the Government Communications Department receives the title of Director of Government Communications.
Mantila worked as a journalist at the Ilkka and Turun Sanomat newspapers between 1985 and 1994. In 1995 he took office at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, working until 2002 in positions that included First Secretary at the Embassies of Finland in Seoul and Madrid. In 2002 he became editor-in-chief of Pohjalainen newspaper and in 2009 editor-in-chief of the Kaleva newspaper.
The Director of Government Communications plans and implements the communications of the Government and coordinates and develops ministries’ external communications. In addition, the Director of Government Communications is responsible for implementing strategic communications of the Government in situations separately determined by the Prime Minister.
