Pääministeri Petteri Orpo

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo will attend the summer meeting of Nordic prime ministers in Iceland on Sunday 25 and Monday 26 June. The Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers has also invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the meeting. This is Petteri Orpo’s first trip abroad as Prime Minister.

“The importance of Nordic cooperation has been emphasised recently, both in Finland an in the other Nordic countries. We also highlight the significance of Nordic cooperation in our new Government Programme. Nordic cooperation on security and defence policy is intensifying, and this will certainly lead to closer cooperation on other issues, too,” says Prime Minister Orpo.

In their meeting, the prime ministers will discuss global challenges and how the Nordic countries can respond to them. Topics on the agenda include the changed security situation in Europe, hybrid and cyber threats and the need to defend democratic values and human rights. The prime ministers will also discuss the protection of marine environments and the significance of the maritime economy and the green transition. In addition, they will discuss the previously adopted vision of the Nordic region as the most sustainable and integrated region in the world and the preparations for the NATO Summit in Vilnius.

The meeting will be held in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago. In connection with the meeting, the prime ministers will attend an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the volcanic eruption on the main island.

Before the meeting, Prime Minister Orpo will visit the NATO air base in Keflavík and have a bilateral meeting with Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir
