Board appointed for the project on the centenary of Finland's independence

The Prime Minister's Office has appointed a board for the project on the centenary of Finland's independence. The board's mandate covers the period from 15 November 2013 to 31 January 2018.

The centenary board is chaired by State Secretary Olli-Pekka Heinonen and its members are Irja Askola, Bishop; Manuela Bosco, author and actor; Martti Häikiö, Professor; Leif Jakobsson, Director; Mikko Kosonen, President; Pekka Lundmark, CEO; Karri Miettinen, musician (artist name Paleface); Riitta Pihlajamäki, TV Sector Manager; Paola Suhonen, designer; Asta Tolonen, Municipal Manager; and Janne Virkkunen, former Editor-in-Chief and Chairman.

The board is to prepare a declaration of the centenary programme which will set out the key objectives, principles, themes and activities for the anniversary year. The declaration will provide a framework and guidelines for the centenary events and steer the planning of the programme, events, projects and necessary arrangements. The board will also be responsible for the overall coordination of the centennial year and for the planning of related events and projects. The objective is to come up with engaging, inspiring and inclusive celebrations.

The centenary board will report on its activities to the Government, the centenary commission and the senior management of the Prime Minister's Office. The centenary commission is chaired by Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, with Minister of Finance Jutta Urpilainen as vice chair. The commission comprises over 60 people representing various sectors of society. The commission will decide on the general outline of the centenary celebrations. General Secretary Hannu Hyttinen from the Prime Minister's Office serves as secretary to the commission. Mr Hyttinen prepares issues for the centenary board and coordinates the centenary celebrations.
