Press release

The Government plenary session issued a decree on the North Atlantic Treaty on 5 April. The North Atlantic Treaty is the founding treaty of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Finland became a member of NATO on 4 April upon depositing its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the United States Government in Brussels. Finland’s NATO membership entered into force internationally with the deposit of the instrument of accession.

The Government decree brings into force the North Atlantic Treaty, as amended by the Accession Protocols, and the act on bringing into force the provisions of a legislative nature in the North Atlantic Treaty. The issuance of the Government decree completes the national approval process, and the North Atlantic Treaty is integrated into Finnish legislation.

Parliament accepted Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty on 1 March 2023 and the President of the Republic decided on Finland’s accession on 23 March 2023.
