The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry promotes the guidance of the implementation of the Fishing Act by appointing a broad-based monitoring group composed of the relevant stakeholders. The term of the monitoring group is from 16 September 2020 to 31 December 2023.

The aim of the monitoring group for the implementation of the Fishing Act is to ensure smooth enforcement and functioning of the Fishing Act in regulating fisheries and the management of the fish stocks. Another aim is to improve transparency and cooperation between stakeholders in the implementation of the Fishing Act.

The task of the monitoring group is to monitor, promote and develop the implementation of the Fishing Act and to assess how well it works. The monitoring group will make proposals to develop the Fishing Act and analyse and bring forth regional perspectives, impacts and solutions. The tasks also include monitoring the Omakala project concerning an information system for reporting migratory fish catches and discussing the legislative amendments the project will require. In its work, the monitoring group will take into account the ecological, economic and social dimensions of sustainability.
